What is a birth chart?

Your birth chart is a physical snapshot of the sky at the exact moment you were born. The Earth rotates on its axis every 24 hours, and as it rotates, different zodiac signs appear to "rise" over the eastern horizon. Each sign stays on the horizon for roughly 2 hours before the next one takes its place. Your rising sign is whichever of the 12 zodiac signs happened to be coming up over the horizon when you were born. The birth chart, calculated from this point, captures not only planetary positions but also the intricate web of nodal points, critical degrees, and the four foundational angles: your ascendant, descendant, midheaven, and nadir.
